Surely, you have many questions about Femring. This section contains a sampling of the questions most frequently asked by women approaching or experiencing menopause.

What is Femring and how does Femring work?
Femring is a vaginal ring prescribed by your healthcare provider to help reduce moderate to severe menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Femring contains a central core of active drug. When Femring is inserted into the vagina, a conversion process occurs that releases estradiol to be absorbed by your body.

Has this product been subjected to extensive trials?
Yes. Clinical trials for Femring were conducted in over 750 women in the US and the UK (England). Femring launched in the UK in 2002 and in the and has been prescribed for many women experiencing menopausal symptoms.

Is Femring easy to insert?
Yes. Women can insert and remove Femring by themselves. Of 5,150 women who self-inserted a placebo vaginal ring, 86.2% reported that insertion was easy, and 83.8% indicated that removal was also easy.*

Will I be able to feel Femring?
Within a study of 5,831 women, 55.6% reported that they never felt their placebo vaginal ring and 30.2% only felt their ring occasionally.*

Can Femring get lost in the vagina?
No. Femring cannot get lost. Femring can be inserted only as far as the end of the vagina and no further. You can reach it easily for removal.

Does Femring have to be sterile?
No. Femring does not have to be sterile prior to insertion.

What if Femring slips out?
During trials, Femring rarely fell out upon a bowel movement, but this activity may cause Femring to shift downward. If your Femring moves out of place, simply push the Femring back in place with your finger. If your Femring falls out, it should be washed in lukewarm water and reinserted.

Do I need to remove Femring before sports activities or before going swimming?
No. It is fine to leave Femring in place for sports activities and swimming.

Are there any times when I should remove Femring?
Femring should be removed and replaced after three months. Other than that, it should remain in place.

Will Femring interfere with sex?
Femring should no interfere with sex. In a study using a placebo vaginal ring, 92.8% reported that it did not interfere with sexual activity. Most women reported their partner could not feel or detect the ring. [Based on responses from 1,660 women.]*

Can I use other medicines with Femring?
Yes. However be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take. This includes prescription and nonprescription [over-the-counter], vitamins and herbal supplements. Some medicines affect how Femring works. Femring may also affect how your other medicines work.

What are the common side effects of Femring?
When Femring was tested, the side effects most often mentioned were headache, vaginal infection, breast tenderness, vaginal bleeding or spotting, back ache and abdominal bloating. These side effects are common with estrogen products.

Less common but serious side effects include breast cancer, cancer of the uterus, stroke, heart attack, blood clots, dementia, gall bladder disease and ovarian cancer.

How should I store Femring?
You should keep this product in a safe place, where children or pets cannot reach it. Femring should be stored at room temperature.

Should I be concerned about breast cancer?
Using estrogens with or without progestins, may increase your chances of getting breast cancer. If you want to know more about the risks of breast cancer, please ask your healthcare provider. A medical professional will be able to explain the benefits and risks of Femring.

How will I remember to change Femring in three months?
When you receive your Femring prescription, click here to enroll in the Femring Reminder Program. You will receive an email reminder o change your ring every three months.

*The results quoted are from the Ring Trial. Data on file, Warner Chilcott (US), Inc. The Ring Trial was conducted in 2002 using placebo rings (no active hormone) to determine acceptability, ease of use, and overall satisfaction with a vaginal ring delivery system. All of the 5,768 women who completed the trial were postmenopausal (no period for at least 12 months); some were users and some were nonusers of hormone replacement therapy.
